HONG KONG and SAN JOSE, July 14, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- UTStarcom (Nasdaq:UTSI), a global telecommunications infrastructure provider, announced today that it has bolstered its footprint in the United States with the opening of a new Silicon Valley office as its ramps up its sales and marketing efforts to US telecommunications carriers and cable service providers.

The company has moved staff and resources from its Fremont, California office to a larger office in San Jose. The new office, which formally opened in June, will play a central role in UTStarcom's ambitions to market its technology to tier-1 and tier-2 telecom carriers and cable multiple system operators, those with the most expansive networks, who are increasingly adopting new Internet Protocol-based network technology to offer advanced voice and data services.
At its opening, the office will house an R&D and product testing lab as well as product demonstrations and displays. In time, it will also include service and support teams dedicated to US customers.
Tim Ti, Senior Vice President for Advanced Network Architecture, relocated to the United States at the end of 2013 to head the new office. He will oversee locally based engineering support, sales and account management personnel. Mr. Ti has over 20 years of experience in R&D and engineering management, and earned a master of science in Computer Engineering from Santa Clara University.
"San Jose is a natural base for us to bolster our US marketing efforts given its proximity to major tech hubs, industry conferences, analysts and potential clients," said Mr. William Wong, UTStarcom's Chief Executive Officer. "We view the United States as a growth market for us given the broad shifts afoot in the way that telecom and cable players operate their networks and the technology they use to do so."
Tapping High Growth Segments of the US Market
The new office will house large-scale displays of UTStarcom's most competitive hardware that is aimed at high growth segments of the telecom industry. Its packet optical transport gear displays and demos feature its TN765, which supports 100 Gigabit Ethernet networks that major US carriers are migrating toward. UTStarcom recently surpassed $250 million in sales of packet optical transport products.
In addition, the office displays and houses demos of UTStarcom's Wi-Fi data offloading product, the MSG10K, which allows mobile operators to create wireless bridge for their users to transition from 4G/LTE networks to Wi-Fi hotspots. As the number of US hotspots grows, mobile carriers increasingly rely on this technology to deliver videos, multimedia applications and heavy bandwidth content without burdening their cellular network.
UTStarcom also intends to use its Silicon Valley office to market products based on Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology. SDN is revolutionizing telecom operations by allowing carriers to launch advanced services like "bandwidth on demand" much faster and with lower operating and capital costs.
UTStarcom has recently completed a successful proof of concept test of its SDN technology with Tier-1 operators from Japan, Korea and Taiwan, and has a suite of SDN products under development.
