UTStarcom Launches NG-PTN - the Next Generation Packet Optical Transport Solution

HONG KONG, Nov. 09, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- UTStarcom (NASDAQ:UTSI), a global telecommunications infrastructure provider, announced today the formal release of NG-PTN product family, the next generation of UTStarcom’s packet optical transport network solution to the industry. The announcement is accompanied by the release of three new devices in the NG-PTN family: TN701B, TN703A, and TN704A aimed at Metro Access and Aggregation segments.

The new NG-PTN solution brings together all of UTStarcom’s most recent innovative developments to deliver highly cost effective, scalable, agile and intelligent metro transport solutions to its customers. The solution implements SDN-based dynamic control plane on a connection-oriented MPLS-TP/CE transport network and enables full integration with the company’s SOOTM Network SDN platform. It builds on the reliability and telecom carrier-grade feature set of UTStarcom’s NetRingTM 700 Series PTN product family, while adding improved operational efficiency of hardware (“HW”) and software (“SW”) architecture, 100GE interface support, and it also includes various automation features and advanced services.

The release of the NG-PTN solution follows the debut of a 100GE core switch device TN765 in 2014, as well as Software-defined Open Optical (“SOOTM”) network solution, Bandwidth on Demand (“BoD”) and Layer3 VPN (“L3VPN”) services introduced earlier this year, all of which became critical components of the new NG-PTN product family.

Key features of the UTStarcom’s new NG-PTN platform include:

  • Improved and highly efficient HW and SW architecture, high port density, low power consumption
  • A wide range of supported interfaces up to 100GE
  • Full integration with UTStarcom’s SDN solution SOOTM Network
  • Support of L3VPN, BoD and other advanced dynamic services from the SDN-based dynamic control plane
  • Advanced automation features (with future software releases)
  • Based on MPLS-TP/CE, rich feature set including sub-50ms resiliency, precise network time/clock synchronization with 1588v2 and SyncE, QoS etc.
  • Overall CAPEX and OPEX savings

The three newly released innovative products TN701B, TN703A, TN704A are designed for Metro Access and Aggregation applications. TN701B is a compact access device featuring 10Gbps capacity and GE interfaces support. It is also suitable for efficient deployment and backhauling of Wi-Fi networks given the support of Power over Ethernet (“PoE”) technology. TN703A is positioned as a higher-level access device offering 64Gbps capacity in a compact 1RU enclosure, and supports 10GE/GE/STM-1/E1 interfaces. TN704A can be used as a low-level aggregation device supporting 136Gbps capacity in a compact 2RU enclosure, and supports 10GE/GE/STM-1/E1 interfaces.

The NG-PTN solution can efficiently serve various metro applications where efficiency, reliability, scalability and availability of telecom carrier-grade features are critical, including mobile backhaul, metro aggregation networks, enterprise network etc. Its architecture takes into account the need for higher flexibility of network topologies and rapidly growing demand for bandwidth, which is particularly important to LTE/LTE-A mobile backhaul networks. The NG-PTN solution is designed to efficiently support 1/10G access and 100G aggregation/core network architecture.

“This release is an important milestone for the company, consolidating multiple innovations in order to deliver the solution highly anticipated by the industry. With the newly launched NG-PTN solution, we will be able to offer to our customers a whole new level of cost effectiveness, agility and scalability that will enable them to efficiently address the challenges of telecom market they are facing today,” said William Wong, UTStarcom's Chief Executive Officer. “Following completion of this important phase, we are going to focus on the further development of the NG-PTN solution. This will bring higher-level aggregation and high-end core NG-PTN devices over the next two years. This will enable us to offer a unique proposition to the market and will offer added value to our customers.”
